UNESCO Strengthens Local Action to Counter Hate Speech and Promote Social Cohesion

Throughout the discussions, participants highlighted the important role that schools, cultural activities and local media can play in bringing people together and encouraging respectful dialogue.

“Schools, cultural and radio activities provide important spaces for promoting dialogue and coexistence and for strengthening young people’s rejection of hate speech,” said Dr Abdeljalil Salah, Director of Student Activities at the Ministry of Education and National Education.

“Promoting acceptance of others and the values of global citizenship should begin from the early stages of education, helping young people grow with respect for diversity and one another,” said Dr Mohammed Mustafa, Secretary-General of the National Commission for Education, Culture and Sciences.

The media also has an important role in ensuring that messages reaching communities contribute to understanding rather than division.

“Coordinated media efforts and carefully targeted awareness messages can play an important role in reducing the spread and impact of hate speech,” said Mr Haider Othman, Director of the Kassala State Radio and Television Corporation.

“Our media should carry messages that bring communities together and promote unity, coexistence and peace, rather than reinforcing tribal or regional divisions,” said Mr Othman Omer Othman, Acting Minister of Education and Guidance of Kassala State.

The workshop concluded with a shared emphasis on moving from dialogue to sustained action: strengthening cooperation between institutions, developing locally relevant awareness messages and reaching communities through education and media.

Through this work, UNESCO continues to support Sudanese institutions and communities in creating spaces for dialogue, responsible communication and peaceful coexistence, contributing to broader efforts for peacebuilding and social cohesion in Sudan.
