Germany Urges Ceasefire in El-Fasher, Sudan

(MENAFN) Germany called on Monday for an urgent halt to hostilities in the besieged city of El-Fasher in western Sudan.

The Foreign Ministry conveyed deep concern about the unfolding crisis in a social media post, referencing reports of numerous civilian casualties as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) advanced into the city.

The ministry emphasized, "We join United Nations aid chief Tom Fletcher in calling for an immediate ceasefire, protection and safe passage for civilians, and unimpeded humanitarian access," echoing Fletcher’s earlier appeal.

El-Fasher’s situation is deteriorating rapidly, according to Fletcher, who stated, "El Fasher is at breaking point. People are trapped and fighting is advancing further into the city. Ceasefire now, in El Fasher, in Darfur and throughout Sudan," in a social media post.

According to the civilian-led El-Fasher Resistance Committees, heavy fighting broke out on Sunday between the Sudanese army and the RSF.

The city has been engulfed in intense clashes for several weeks, following a coordinated multi-front assault by the paramilitary force, which has surrounded El-Fasher from five directions in an effort to capture the strategically significant city.

The RSF has maintained a siege on El-Fasher since May 2024, while the Sudanese army attempts to lift the blockade. The city is a vital hub for humanitarian operations across the five Darfur states.

The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and forced millions of people to flee their homes.
