RSF Commits “Ethnic Cleansing” in Sudan’s El-Fasher, Doctors Say

(MENAFN) In a critical escalation of the Sudanese conflict, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been accused of executing a massacre in El-Fasher, the North Darfur capital, targeting residents based on their ethnicity and simultaneously looting essential healthcare centers. The shocking allegations surfaced on Monday, stemming from a local medical organization.

The Sudan Doctors Network released an urgent dispatch via the US social media platform X, condemning the paramilitary group's actions. "In a heinous massacre committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) yesterday evening in El Fasher—adding to their widespread crimes across El Fasher and the Darfur region—the RSF killed unarmed civilians on ethnic grounds in what amounts to an act of ethnic cleansing,” the network stated.

Reports conveyed by the network's on-the-ground teams indicate that a significant number of individuals were killed by the RSF on Sunday. Compounding the crisis, accessing the devastated neighborhoods is nearly impossible due to the severe instability. The statement elaborated, “It remains difficult to access the affected areas due to the complete security collapse caused by the RSF.”

This news follows fierce fighting between the rebel faction and the Sudanese army, which erupted in the city on Sunday, as reported by the civilian-led El-Fasher Resistance Committees. The pivotal city has been the site of intense combat for weeks, triggered by a wide-ranging offensive from the RSF. The paramilitary group has encircled El-Fasher from five directions in a relentless bid to capture the strategically vital hub.

The RSF initiated the siege on El-Fasher on May 10, 2024. The Sudanese army is currently focused on breaching this blockade, as the city functions as the central operations hub for humanitarian aid across the five Darfur states. The national army and the RSF have been locked in a destructive civil conflict since April 2023, a confrontation that has claimed thousands of lives and resulted in the displacement of millions.
