Sudan Issues Flood Alert as Nile River Water Rises
In a statement, the Irrigation Ministry confirmed that river monitoring stations had detected dangerously high water levels in key areas including Wad Al-Ais, Madani, Khartoum, Shendi, Atbara, Berber, and Jebel Awlia.
Flood-level waters were reported across the states of Sennar, Al Jazirah, and Khartoum, as well as along the White Nile, the ministry said, urging residents to remain on high alert.
Over the past 48 hours, various parts of Sudan have already been hit by flooding as the Nile and its tributaries—the Blue Nile from Ethiopia and the White Nile originating at Lake Victoria—swell beyond normal seasonal levels.
Government data reveals that since June 30, more than 125,000 people have been impacted by severe rainfall and flooding.
Sudan faces annual inundations during its rainy season, which runs from June to October. This year's flooding comes as the country grapples with a brutal conflict between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a war that has killed thousands and displaced millions since erupting in April 2023.
